© Roman AltenhoferOur breeding goal is the long-term potential for Grand Prix, not simply a spectacular impression at a young horse championship.
Some three-year-olds catch the eye with extravagant movement and expressive front-leg action. We value a strong young horse performance, and our own breeding has celebrated championship success. But that first impression alone cannot tell us which horse will eventually develop the collection, balance, strength and rideability needed for Grand Prix.
At Gestüt Winter, we place particular importance on carefully selected genetics, a clear and willing mind, sound conformation and progressive, horse-friendly training. Andreas and Steffi Winter are both qualified equine master professionals. We breed with a long-term sporting ambition and respect each horse’s individual development.
Some future Grand Prix horses reveal their greatest qualities only with maturity, strength and education. Young horse success and Grand Prix potential can certainly go together, but they are not the same measure of quality.
At Gestüt Winter, character, quality and a horse's willingness to work together are inseparable. A horse should be a pleasure both under saddle and in everyday life, whether its rider is an ambitious amateur or a professional.
A calm, cooperative temperament and trustworthy daily handling form the foundation of a lasting partnership.
We value horses that want to learn, respond to their riders and offer a genuinely enjoyable feeling in the saddle.
Careful breeding and age-appropriate development support the individual horse and its long term sporting potential.
“A great dressage partner should not only be able to perform. It should want to work with you.”
Experienced breeding. Thoughtful development. Personal relationships.
Our breeding program is built on mare families we have developed over generations, rather than on a changing collection of purchased broodmares.
By breeding from our own female lines, we know the character, rideability, development and strengths of these families first-hand. This continuity gives us a deeper perspective when planning matings and evaluating young horses.
From foal to young riding horse, we raise our horses with consistency, patient handling and the individual attention they deserve. Our primary focus is on promising young dressage horses up to five years of age, with older horses occasionally available.
ASK ABOUT OUR YOUNG HORSES ↗
Our breeding achievements are more than awards. They offer a glimpse of the quality, dedication and careful choices behind each new generation. Here are a few horses from our own breeding.
© Matthias MayerA double national champion and World Championship participant from our breeding, representing the kind of quality and long-term perspective we strive for.
© Nicola Baur-RonaNational reserve champion among dressage mares and one example of our breeding finding a valued new home in the United States.
© Helene IljazovicSuccessful in competition and presented at the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses, reflecting the strength of our breeding lines.

Competition experience and breeding achievements are part of our story. But our purpose goes beyond an early result: we aim to breed horses with the rideability, character and development potential for lasting partnerships in dressage.
For us, long term quality matters just as much as a beautiful moment in the arena.
Achievements shown are examples of horses from our breeding and do not imply any guaranteed future sporting result for an individual horse.

Every enquiry starts with a conversation about your ambitions, experience, preferences and the kind of partnership you are looking for. We then present suitable horses personally, with an honest assessment and a thoughtful eye for the right match.
Our selection is naturally limited because we primarily offer horses from our own breeding, with a focus on foals and young dressage horses up to five years old.
Whether you are a dedicated amateur or an experienced professional, we would love to hear what your ideal partner looks like.
